If your system stores power in batteries, you need a charge controller to avoid overcharging the batteries. When the batteries are at full charge and there is no place for the solar electricity to be used, the charge controller will regulate the output of the solar equipment so the batteries will not get overcharged and harmed.

Charge controllers are rated according to how many amps they can handle. Typically a charge controller can handle up to 60 amps of power at different voltages.

Charge controllers have different accessories including digital metering which can tell you watts, amps, and, on some, a trip setting that will tell you how much electricity you have used since last pressing the trip button. Some charge controllers have automatic equalization for the batteries and others have a button to start equalization. Another accessory is MPPT or Maximum Power Point Tracking. A charge controller with this accessory can boost the voltage of the panels when the voltage is too low to successfully charge the battery. In some cases you can get up to a 20% increase in power output which more than makes up for the added cost of the MPPT option.
